Rugby player turned baker Nick Macleod comes from a Rhiwbina family of passionate foodies. “I have my parents and grandparents to thank for my obsession with food. From an early age I have been surrounded by the wonderful smells of freshly baked cakes and breads and home cooked, seasonal dishes. Most of my fondest memories relate to food, from fresh crêpes on holiday in Brittany as a child, to our tradition of leek and potato soup and hot dogs on bonfire night and more recently some incredible Michelin star meals with my wife.

Food is a big part of our family life and I want my children to grow up having the knowledge and skills to cook fresh, seasonal, healthy and delicious food.

I find bread in particular, fascinating. Being able to turn flour, water and salt (at its most basic) into something scrumptious, nourishing and also very varied, depending on how you prepare and handle the ingredients, is just magical.

I feel exceptionally lucky and privileged to have a long and very enjoyable rugby career and now, at my own OMB Cardiff – based back in Rhiwbina, where I grew up and first played rugby – I can also pursue something I have just as much passion and drive for. I love teaching the baking classes in my kitchen, and doing deliveries on Cardiff streets I know like the back of my hand.”

Rugby World

I’m actually really chuffed to get a feature in Rugby World but I didn’t think all those years ago that I’d get in as a baker, not a rugby player!! Just incase you missed it….Haha!
