FAQ

SUBSCRIPTIONS:

When do you deliver?

We deliver by bike across the Exeter mile on Tuesdays between 5-7pm. When you book, we will check your location and offer you a one-hour slot depending on our delivery routes.

Why is it Subscription-Only Sales?

Subscriptions mean that as a small, locally-based business we can plan well in advance for orders, buying the right amount of stock, minimising waste and planning efficiently for our delivery slots.

Why Can’t I Choose Each Item For Delivery? What If I Don’t Like The Bread/Soup/Preserve?

When you buy a subscription, we’ll email you to find out about anything you don’t like, to find out if you are vegetarian, and to check any other dietary issues.
The idea behind the bakery is to share a world of great bread, soups and preserves so that, over a month or more, you get to enjoy an exciting range of food. You get quality guaranteed, but also an element of surprise and discovery with each delivery to your door. But if there’s something delivered that you really don’t like, let us know and we’ll offer a replacement item.

How Do I Know If I’m In The Mile?

We deliver in and around St Thomas – have a look at the map on here and do email if you’re not sure if you are within the boundary. We can deliver to work/business addresses but please bear in mind that we deliver early evening (5-7pm) and you would have to be there in person to collect or provide us with a waterproof box to leave bread orders in.

Can I Collect From You?

Sorry, no. We only offer a delivery service to subscribers who live or work in the mile.

I’m Not Sure I Can Always Be in For Delivery. Can You Leave The Order in a Porch etc?

If you have a porch or waterproof box you are happy for me to leave an order in, that’s fine for bread-only subscriptions or bread and jam orders. The bread is always wrapped in a brown paper bag. However, we cannot offer this for soups as they need to be kept chilled after delivery.

When Will My Subscription Start?

You can either opt for a one-month or three-month subscription. Each month’s subscription is for 4 weekly deliveries, and three months is for 12. There is a discount for three-month subscriptions. Your card will be charged as soon as you place an order.

What If I’m Away On Holiday or Need to Miss a Delivery During the Subscription Period?

That’s no problem. Simply let us know in advance (by noon on the Thursday before the delivery/ies you will miss) and we’ll amend your subscription. There will be 4-6 weeks across the year when the bakery is closed for holidays, too, and we’ll advise these dates well in advance.

Are You Inspected By The Council For Food Hygiene Standards?

Yes. I was awarded the top rating (a 5) for Food Hygiene by an inspector from Exeter City Council on 29 May 2018. I have completed the required Food Hygiene Level 2 training and obtained the qualification from that.

Is It Possible To Buy Gift Vouchers For Subscriptions?

No. Because demand is so high, we cannot offer gift voucher subscriptions in case we cannot fulfil them. We do offer some extra deliveries for special occasions (e.g. Mother’s Day) as gifts or as competition prizes – follow us on social media or sign up for the OMB Exeter newsletter to hear about everything first.

How Eco-Friendly Is The Business?

Our main ingredients (flour, vegetables, fruit etc.) are sourced locally, and additional ingredients are bought from local producers and suppliers wherever possible – we also use home-grown and foraged produce and also do food swaps locally. If you have a glut of fruit or allotment produce and would like to swap for some OMB bread, do drop us an exeter@onemilebakery.com. Seasonality is the guiding principle behind what we offer in terms of soups and preserves. We aim for zero food waste through the subscription delivery service. Delivery is on foot or by bike, and we only use 100% plastic-free, compostable food packaging: we’ll explain what’s what with your first delivery.

CLASSES

What is your Refund Policy for classes? Can I cancel my booking?

Due to the small-scale nature of our bakeries and the classes we teach, we have the following policy in place for refunds/cancellations, depending on notice period:
Less than one week before the class, or no-shows on the day: no refund or transfer is offered.

More than one week but less than eight weeks before the class, if we are able to resell your place, we offer a gift voucher for another class or a transfer to another date (subject to availability). An administrative fee of £25 will be charged.

More than eight weeks, you have the option of transferring to another class (subject to availability). An administrative fee of £25 will be charged.

If you are unable to attend, friends or family can attend in your place, with 24 hours’ notice. You will need to give us the name and contact details of the person attending, and advise us of any dietary requirements.

If you are unable to attend due to illness, we will need to see documentary evidence of this before being able to offer a transfer to another date.

I’m Booked Onto a Class. What Do I Need To Know/BRING ON THE DAY?

All classes are held in at my home in Exeter (address given on booking) where I bake my bread for delivery customers. On classes, I like to show you what amazing baking you can achieve at home in a normal domestic kitchen. When you book a class (or redeem a gift voucher) I send out all the information you need, with class timings etc.

All you need to bring is an apron if you have one, comfy footwear and a bag to take your bread home. Bear in mind it gets quite warm in the kitchen once the ovens are on, so even if it’s chilly outside, it won’t be indoors! You will get a print-out of all recipes to take home with you, along with your lovely bakes. A vegetarian two-course meal is included in all classes, with a glass of wine or a soft drink. Tea, coffee and light snacks are served early on in the class. Please advise of any further dietary requirements – email me at exeter@onemilebakery.com.

I’ve Received a Gift Voucher For a Baking Class. How Do I Book In?

Have a look at the Classes page of the website: it lists all the forthcoming classes. Our vouchers are valid for any class, so find one with places available, click through as if to buy a place and you will see the Redeem a Voucher option: enter the code that’s on your voucher and this will secure your place. I will then email you to confirm everything, giving you all the information you need about the day. We list new dates regularly for the classes, so do check back to find a date that suits: our vouchers are valid for a year.

I’m Interested In Booking a Private Class With Some Friends/a Corporate Baking Day – What are the Costs and Booking Process?

I offer private classes at The One Mile Bakery - Exeter for groups of 4-6 people booking together for any of the classes. The costs per person are the same as if booking onto any of the other classes – £125 per person – and we cover the same material, but you can book on a date to suit you all and it will be a fun, private day for your group. If you would like to discuss this, drop me an email at exeter@onemilebakery.com or give me a call. I can also offer bespoke baking days for special occasions or classes mixing elements from several of the classes; again, get in touch to discuss. If you are interested for a baking class/event for a larger group, this can be arranged at a larger venue and tailored to your requirements. For all private classes, payment needs to be made in advance when we agree a date.

I went on the basic bread making course. Boudicca is an excellent host and teacher. I have made bread in the past, but picked up many new tips... I have since baked a further loaf at home with great success and there will be more to come!
